The State Minister for Labour, Mwesigwa Rukutana is on Tuesday appearing before the Ntugamo grade one magistrate’s court to plead to charges read against him and apply for bail.

Rukutana was on Monday charged and remanded to Kakiika Prison in Mbarara District on Monday following acts of violence that ended with gun lofting leading to one person being injured and a motor vehicle damaged.

Court heard from the prosecution that the minister, who is also the MP for Rushenyi Constituency on September 5th, 2020 at Kagugu Village in Ntungamo district, unlawfully attempted to cause the death of one Daniel Rweburungi contrary to section 204(a) of the Penal Code Act.

Rukutana on Monday afternoon appeared before the Ntungamo Magistrates Court court and was charged with seven counts of Attempted Murder, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Malicious Damage, and Threatening Violence.

However, because the grade one magistrate had no jurisdiction over the attempted murder charge, he never pleaded to it and is expected to plead to the charge.

He was charged together with three of his bodyguards and remanded to Kakiika prison, Kyamugorani in Mbarara.

The bodyguards are identified as Egec Paul, Kozala Faizal, and Okello John Bosco.

The minister was arrested on Saturday together with his three bodyguards before being detained at Mbarara Central Police Station.
