The Electoral Commission has confirmed that only 4 of 22 presidential candidates have been cleared and are set for the nominations happening next week on the 2nd and 3rd November 2020 at Kyamboggo University sports ground.
According to the EC spokesperson the 4 including the ruling NRM party’s Yoweri Museveni, Henry Tumukunde, Nancy Linda Nakalembe, and Fred Mwesigye, all independents have been issued certificates of compliance after verifying their supporters.
Bukenya says the cleared aspirants are expected to present their certificates before the returning officers on Monday and Tuesday next week when nominations take place.
Section 10(b) of the Presidential Elections Act provides that a presidential candidate’s nomination shall be supported by not less than 100 persons who are registered voters from not less than 98 districts which form two-thirds of all the districts of Uganda.
Last week while doing the victory dance after the court declared NUP a legal party, the party leader Robert Kyagulanyi who is also aspiring for presidency announced his readiness to be nominated on the 3rd of November after asserting he had fulfilled all the necessary requirements.
Bukenya however says the EC is still verifying for a total of 18 candidates this week ahead of their nomination next week.
Among them include National Unity Platform, NUP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, Patrick Amuriat-FDC, Gregg Mugisha Muntu(Alliance for National Transformation), Joseph Kabuleta(independent), and Joseph Mabirizi( independent) among others.
