The Presidential candidate Tumukunde had a heavy dose of teargas today at Rukungiri in the Kigezi sub-region where he was launching his maidan campaign for the top seat.
Tumukunde’s supporters had organized a procession of Boda Boda riders to welcome him, paralyzing traffic and business in the town.
Tear gas rocked Rukungiri as anti-riot police and army engaged in running battles with the procession to bring back sanity to the town.
Tumukunde entered the town at about 01:30: PM in a convoy of about 200 boda boda riders who had waited for him at the Rukungiri-Ntungamo border of Kahengye.
However, on reaching Hakasitamo in Nyakibare, Southern division, Rukungiri Municipality heading to the municipal stadium, they met with heavy police and army roadblock.
Superintendent of Police Henry Kintu, Rukungiri District Police Commander allowed only vehicles to proceed and blocked boda bodas triggering chaos and insults to security officers.
It is in the process that Kintu ordered for the firing of tear gas to disperse them because of an EC ban on processions in the face of covid-19.
However,an irritated Tumukunde squabbled that there was no reason for tear gas because boda boda riders were peaceful. He says that security was only trying to sabotage his strength but could not manage.
He also explained abit of what his manifesto will focus on saying it will improve education and health by constructing a public university and a hospital in Rukungiri to serve the people of Rukungiri and Kanungu.
Tomorrow, he will campaign in Rubanda, Rukiga, and Kabale.
