After a protracted court battle with the high court on murder charges, city businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu has finally been sentenced to jail for 5 years.

Kanyamunyu was convicted of manslaughter by the high court following a guilty plea with the directorate of Public Prosecution-DPP.

High Court Judge Steven Mubiru to 5 years and one month.

Kanyamunyu pleaded guilty to shooting child rights activist Jimmy Akena in 2016 before rushing him to Nakasero hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries hours later.

The incident happened on the 12 November when Kanyamunyu who was driving in the company of his girlfriend shot Akena with a pistol in the stomach after accusing him of scratching his ride a Land cruiser using a Toyota Premio the deceased was driving.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari has been set free by the court after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) lost interest in her case and withdrew the charges.

Kanyamunyu had asked the court on Monday to grant him a two-day adjournment to enable him a pursue chances of a plea-bargain where he can be convicted of a less offense which carries a lenient sentence.

Kanyamunyu was also seeking to have his murder trial stopped as he awaits the results from a cultural justice system involving Acholi cultural leaders, over the death of Kenneth Akena.

However, Justice Mubiru neglected the later appeal on grounds that such a traditional reason cannot lead to the postponement of a criminal trial.
