The Forum for Democratic Change party –FDC has scoffed at the Electoral Commission-EC for promoting the spread of Covid -19 while engaging in an ongoing exercise of distribution of voter location slips.
While holding a presser at the party’s head offices in Najjanankumbi, John Kigonyogo the FDC deputy spokesperson says it is ironic that the EC is distributing voter location slips in areas where rallies and campaigns have been banned.
Kigonyogo says the current practice gathers crowds that are bigger than the numbers of 200 people required for political meetings by the same electoral body.
”They banned rallies, they banned campaigns but it is so ironical, and I think maybe we are naive as FDC for someone who bans rallies of 200 people and distributes voter location slips at a parish like Kasubi which has over 40.000 voters and you bring all the LC’S in 1 place, to distribute voter verification slips, are you not spreading COVID? Isn’t that assembly bigger than a rally,if common sense is still with us.”Kigonyogo noted
The FDC is now demanding that the EC boss Justice Simon Byabakama explains if the voter location slips are a necessity that is more important than the lives of people.
”As FDC, we demand an immediate response from Mr.Byabakama , why they are distributing these voter location slips at the parish level when they have just banned rallies and campaigns in those districts, are they as important as thy take them if you don’t have these voter location slips cant you vote? is it a necessity that you must distribute it at the expense of the lives of the people? this is what we are asking Mr. Byabakama if he is serious.” he added
The process of votes picking up their voter location slips is currently underway after officially kicking off on Sunday at all parish levels.
It is expected to run until January 12, 2021, according to the Electoral Commission.
The location slip is meant to help the voters to locate their polling station. It shows the name, photo, and date of birth, constituency, Sub County, parish, and the polling station of a given voter.
