Top government officials have come out to dispute claims by the National Unity Platform-NUP strongman Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine that his family has been targeted.
The Government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has trashed these allegations as untrue and an old narrative by used by various opposition figures in the past to blemish the reputation of the government.
“Remember Besigye and Sejusa even fled Uganda claiming they were in danger. Besigye and Byanyima claimed that Besigye would be poisoned while in Luzira prison 2006.
Opondo says the Government and its leadership have no visible record of hurting or killing politicians, their families, or their opponents.
“To the contrary, it’s Kyagulanyi who has been defiant throughout this election campaign including assaulting police officers on lawful duty and insulting whoever disagrees with him. NRM Government and leadership have a long good track record of not harming or killing politicians, their families or opponents” Opondo notes.
Bobi wine on Thursday claimed he was compelled to send his 4 kids abroad because of a looming threat upon their lives by certain elements in the government.
Bobi says his family members have been witch-hunted for close to3 years now by the government but the threats only worsened in the past 2 months.
“I received intelligence information on how some elements within the government had planned to kidnap my children and force me to sign political agreements against my will, therefore our friends in the Diaspora resolved to stay with the children for the meantime,” Bobi explained.
Also trashing Bobi wine’s claims is The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oyrem who has described Kyagulanyi as a traitor for sneaking his family out of the country abroad.
Oryem says Bobi wine has betrayed all his friends and people that have been standing with him by stealthily taking his kids to the USA.
‘’ but this shows that this guy has betrayed all his friends and those he claims to be standing for, he is a traitor, he cares about his family and himself more than all these people who are sacrificing for him, there are people who have stood in the frontline to fight for him, by sneaking his family clandestinely out of the country, without care and concern for those families of those other families who are sacrificing to be with him. ‘’Oryem said
Jacob Siminyu the Immigration spokesperson has also rubbished claims by Bobi that immigration officials had leaked the travel details of the children saying it’s the people at the airlines, who could have had access to these details.
