Uganda Peoples Defence Forces-UPDF is investigating a rowdy soldier for going on a rampage and firing random bullets in the public, killing 5 people and injuring 3 others.

Lance Omara Corporal Denis Awillo went on a shooting spree on Monday morning at Nansana,Gganda in Wakiso district under unclear circumstances.

In the process, 2 Local Defence Unit personnel, 1 civilian Rita Nabingo, Abraham  Masereka, and John Wafula, 1 police special constable (SPC) Issac Mulungi were gunned down at about 9 am.

The deputy UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col.Deo Akiiki says investigations have commenced establishing what happened, although the shooter Omara has been confirmed dead after he was shot at in self-defense.

“Joint investigations have commenced to ascertain what prompted the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) to shoot his colleagues. The public shall be given more details about the incident as we ascertain them.”Akiiki said

Col Akiiki has meanwhile has condemned the shooting by the junior commander.

We condemn the outrageous act of the lower commander against his subordinates. We extend our sincere condolences to those whose life has been taken and grieve with the families,” he added

However, Kampala metropolitan police mouthpiece Patrick Onyango says they suspect that Omara was operating under the influence of alcohol when he fired 18 bullets but the motive of the shooting is still unknown.

”Dennis Omara was put out of action,2 civilians yet to be identified were also injured and rushed to unknown clinics, Bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City hospital for postmortem, investigation into the incident is ongoing”Onyango says
