The president of Chad Idriss Deby has been pronounced dead on Tuesday Afternoon.

The announcement was made by the army in Chad after Idriss Deby injuries sustained in fighting at the front-line.

The president had joined the gun battle alongside the Chad’s army in wading off rebel forces who have launched an assault on the capital N’Djamena.

“President Idriss Déby of Chad breathed his last breath defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield”, army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said in a statement read out on state television.

The war is still ongoing in the capital despite the president’s demise.

President Deby was expected to win a sixth term in office following elections on April the eleventh.

Deby took 79.3 percent of the vote in the April 11 presidential election, the results showed.

Deby ,68, postponed his victory speech to supporters and instead went to visit Chadian soldiers battling rebels, according to his campaign manager.
