President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that 4.8 million people need to be fully vaccinated for the economy to fully open.
During his inauguration speech after being sworn in, his at Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds, President Yoweri Museveni said the lockdown all the priority groups’ first need to be vaccinated.
The president listed some of these groups as the population over 50 years,-3.348.500, Health workers in both private and public facilities -150000, teachers and lecturers -550000, Security personnel 250000 and persons with underlying health conditions below 50 years at 500000.
This announcement has broken the hearts of several Ugandans operating in the entertainment sector and Bars who had hopes in the reopening of the economy in the near future.
Bars, discotheques, and theatres remain officially closed for more than 1 year now after a full lockdown was instituted in March 2020.
Also, congregations of more than 200 people are not allowed and children are still not allowed to attend Church. While schools were re-opened, nursery schools still remain closed.
Museveni says only 375,283 people had received the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccines.
Uganda has only received 864,000 vaccine doses from the COVAX facility and an additional 100,000 vaccines from the government of India.
The country is supposed to get an additional five million vaccines at the end of this month or early next month.
However, it remains to be seen where the vaccines might be coming from since the COVAX facility is likely to face
challenges getting vaccines from manufacturers based in India.
