Uganda’s telenovela of the moment Sanyu, 2021 Uganda Film Festival Best TV Drama Winner Prestige, Mama and Me, Story Yange, and Date My Family Uganda are all now streaming in the UK.

31 May 2021: Ugandans living in the diaspora – the UK, Australia and New Zealand – can now watch these popular local TV shows from Uganda that are streaming on Showmax.

Sanyu

Uganda’s hit telenovela Sanyu is a story straight out of a Cinderella fairytale. This telenovela tells the story of rural teenage girl, titular Sanyu (played by Tracy Kababiito) who is tricked by her step-mother to abandon her pursuit for higher education and ‘sold off’ to work as a housemaid for the wealthy Kirunda family in the city. Here, she falls for her employer’s young son, Oscar (Allan Katongole, 27 Guns).

Directed and produced by actor and filmmaker Mathew Nabwiso (Prickly Roses), Sanyu also stars other big names in Uganda like veteran actor Abby Mukiibi (The Last King of Scotland), Mushema Housen (The Hostel, Power of Legacy), award-winning actress Eleanor Nabwiso (Beneath the Lies) and more.

At the 2021 Uganda Film Festival Awards, Sanyu was nominated for Best TV Series and Best Actress in a Drama Series (for Tracy Kababiito).

Prestige

What happens when a family becomes enemies? Produced by Nathan Magoola (The Felistas Fable), Prestige follows the tumultuous lives of two sisters and rival ad executives Jazmine (Nana Kagga, Beneath the Lies, CSI: NY) and Eunice (Cleopatra Koheirwe, The Last King of Scotland, Sense8).

Prestige won Best TV Series and Best Actress in a TV Drama (for lead Nana), and was also nominated for Best Actor in a TV Drama (for Symon Base Kalema) at the 2021 Uganda Film Festival Awards.

Story Yange

Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite Ugandan power houses shot to fame? Now you have a chance to get up close and personal with them and get to hear their stories on Story Yange, a docu-series that profiles some of the biggest personalities in Uganda, from political activists to models to musicians to actors.

Here, you’ll follow them through their life’s journey, from their struggles to their heartbreaks to their triumphs, all moments that made them the success stories they are today.

Some of the famous faces to see on the show include Iryn Namubiru, Martin Aliker, Judith Heard and Princess Evelyn Komuntale.

Date My Family Uganda

Date my Family Uganda is a reality series that follows different single people in Uganda as they attempt to find love with three potential dates. But it’s not your typical dating reality – the family is involved in the matchmaking, and it can get embarrassing really fast.

Before the hopeful singles lay their eyes on their potential dates, they have to meet their families (and friends). After which they get to take their pick depending on whether they were impressed by the family or not.

Mama and Me

Mama and Me is a comedy-drama series that follows a middle-aged teacher whose life takes a turn for the worst when she’s accused of killing her husband. She must do everything in her power to prove her innocence and stay out of jail, and to fight off her in-laws who want to grab her property while also raising her three daughters – her only source of comfort.

Created and produced by Africa Movie Academy Awards nominee Dilman Dila (The Felistas Fable), Mama and Me stars Debbie Bakuseka, Nambozo Gloria Catherine, Suubi Nalwanga and Kaylar Kirabo Elizabeth.
