18 NUP Supporters Get Bail

The Army court has finally granted bail to 17 jailed NUP supporters including musician Nubian Lee and producer Dan Magic, and NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi‘s bodyguard Edward Ssebuufu aka Eddie Mutwe.

Ululations filled the courtroom on Monday morning as the chairman of the general court-martial Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti gave the accused a 20 million non-cash bail and each of their sureties bonded at 50 million Shillings, not cash.

The sureties include Aisha Kabanda, the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Unity Platform, the head of the Women League Flavia Kalule Nabagabe, Mathias Mpuuga, the Vice President  NUP Buganda Region, the Secretary-General David Lewis Rubongoya, the head of Mobilisation Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu and the head of Training and Patriotism Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro.

Bail was granted after several futile attempts that left them and their relatives in tears, the group which has been on remand for close to six months.

Lt General Gutti argued that they had stayed long on remand and their application for bail had merit.

After their release, many broke down into tears, in disbelief at the good news that had come their way.

The prosecution had earlier stated that 17 were still being examined and that their affidavits were not yet ready.

On Tuesday last week, neither the suspects nor their lawyers showed up at the Makindye based army court for their bail hearing as earlier mentioned.

The group has been charged with unlawful possession of ammunition following their arret in Kalangala in December 2020 .

They were part of a group of 49 people that were arrested frduring a campaign rally by then-presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi .
