Ugandans are anxiously awaiting a cash relief package from the government to aid them in the 42 days of lockdown.
However, it is not yet clear who is eligible to benefit, how many and what criteria the vulnerable will be picked.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced that the government was preparing a COVID-19 relief plan under the Office of the Prime Minister-OPM.
She said it was agreed at the task force meeting on Sunday that instead of distributing food relief items to the vulnerable, cash will be sent on mobile money,
“After the COVID-19 Taskforce meeting, we have agreed and decided that any support that will be provided to the persons most affected by the lockdown measures will be through cash tokens and not physical food distribution,” Nabbanja said.
Last year the OPM had unsuccessfully targeted to distribute food to vulnerable groups of up to 1.5 million people in areas of Kampala and Wakiso.
While delivering his address about COVID-19 on Friday, June 18, President Yoweri Museveni directed the Office of the Prime Minister led by Hon Robinah Nabbanja to hold an immediate meeting and identify items that government can use to support the vulnerable groups during the 42 days of lockdown.
