Ugandans are beaming with excitement following the news of the approval of the famous 20ml covidex natural herb in managing the deadly Covid 19 virus.
This comes after the National Drug Authority-NDA finally endorsed the use of the Covidex herbal medicine as a supportive medication in treating covid-19 patients.
The NDA Executive Director, David Nahamya confirmed the development at the Uganda Media center on Tuesday morning.
Nahamya says the approval was effected after a thorough assessment and inspection of the factory manufacturing this Covidex.
He says the herbal drug will now be used to treat viral infections besides Covid19.
He however states that the natural herb doesn’t cure covid 19 but serves as a supplement or supportive treatment to the recovery of the virus.
The drug was made by Mbarara University scientists led by Prof Patrick Ogwang. Prof Ogwang is the proprietor of Jena Herbals Uganda Ltd.
It has since flooded drug stores and is selling out so quickly at unregulated prices .
Each of the small 20mls bottle is currently selling between Shs20,000 and Shs50,000,depending on where one buys it from .
However, on June 14, both the National Drug Authority (NDA) and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) both issued statements banning the use of the drug.
A section of Ugandans have also stored the throat and nasal drops drug in their homes and have been using it regardless of the ban .
The public excitment mostly stems from relief considering the exorbitant prices at private health facilities in treating the highly infectious disease.
During this second wave of the covid19 pandemic, there have been complaints from the public about health workers/doctors abandoning patients in hospitals unattended to, lack of oxygen at health facilities, overcharging covid 19 patients among others.
Recently ,the ministry of health revealed that they are working on a new law that will see government regulate charges in private health facilities.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine that a new law to regulate them is in the process.
