”Buy Food Not Beer ”Nabbanja Warns

Sections of Ugandans have on Thursday received covid 19 relief cash on their mobile money accounts.

This comes after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja this morning officially rolled out the disbursement exercise at the office of the prime minister.

While launching the exercise Nabbanja appreciated the head of state for initiating the directive and asked Ugandans to make good use of the money to buy food.

”In fact, he has been at the forefront, It is him that directed that we identify vulnerable people that feed on hand to mouth, that money should be used to buy food, not beer, let us buy food for our families, we know that covid19 is still here,” Nabbanga stated.

The exercise that was done practically at the OPM, saw the PM Nabbanja officially announce and directly call the 1st beneficiary from Gulu City.

Godfrey Oloya, a boda-boda rider in Gulu District was called by Nabbanja to confirm as the first recipient of the cash.

By the time of filing this story,126,552 beneficiaries’ details had been uploaded into the payment system.

Post Bank is working in tandem with telecom companies MTN and Airtel to execute.

Nabbanja has also asked the above telecom companies not to deduct any money off the received covid 19 relief cash.

”We agreed that you would not deduct any money from this token,we also agreed that you would have those people with your normal dates, that this money will be spared for its intended purpose, I want to tank partners and service providers and request you to do a good job to ensure that this exercise succeeds,”Nabbanja said

Meanwhile, Minister for Gender and labor Hon Betty Amongi has confirmed that up to 210,000 persons have received their 100.000 shillings already although the validation of the data process is still ongoing.

‘’Today we only have about 40-50 percent of the data, so we extended the validation to allow the rest to complete and send in their names,’’ Amongi said

She has explained that the delay in disbursement especially in parts of the Kampala metropolitan area is highly attributed to disagreements between locals and their lc’s while compiling the lists.

The cash is being distributed through mobile money accounts or post-Bank Uganda Branches. Post Bank is working in tandem with telecom companies MTN and Airtel to execute.

16 vulnerable categories across municipalities and cities countrywide, making up 501,107 households will receive this cash.

Among them include;bus and taxi drivers plus conductors; baggage carriers, touts, wheelbarrow pushers, traffic guides and loaders in tax and bus parks, stages and other areas like Kikuubo.

Also, barmen, DJs, barmaids, waiters, waitresses and bouncers, gym and restaurant workers, food vendors in tax, bus parks and arcades, musicians, comedians, producers, promoters, salon and massage parlour employees, teachers and support staff in both government and private schools but are not on payroll, car washers, slum dwellers, street vendors, shoe shiners, orphans and vulnerable children.
