Parliament has officially confirmed the Shadow Cabinet recently appointed by the Leader of Opposition (LOP) Mathias Mpuuga.

The role of the  Shadow Cabinet is to hold the government accountable, examine policies, and present alternative proposals.

The  MPs include the National Unity Platform – NUP with 18, Forum for Democratic Change -FDC 7, Independents 2, Democratic Party – DP 1, Uganda People’s Congress -UPC 1 and People’s Progressive Party – PPP 1.

While chairing the plenary on Wednesday afternoon, Deputy Speaker Anita Among confirmed 30 MPs as the shadow ministers after the list was presented to her.

Mpuuga explained to the August house that a smaller number was maintained in the interest of quality

”We made no attempt to tamper with the constitution or the rules to expand the cabinet,we are believers in a lean government, we are not going to drink water and preach wine, the shadow cabinet is 30 members and we believe we shall be able to offer the people of Uganda the best alternative. Mpuga mentioned

While appointing his cabinet last month, President Museveni sought Parliament’s approval to increase the number of Ministers from 79 to 81.

This was included in a motion backed by  Articles 113 (2) and 114 (3) of the Constitution which provides that the cabinet shall have a total number of 42 ministers (Cabinet and State) and that the president can only vary the number with the approval of parliament.
