Police have halted individual distribution of relief food items by members of the public to vulnerable Ugandans.

Police mouthpiece Fred Enanga in a joint security presser on Monday noted that they had realized an increase in food distribution from the public that has led to a disregard of the standard operating procedures-SOPS.

Enanga explained that this had led to overcrowding, fighting for food among other situations.

”We have seen people crowding in large numbers. In some of the photos and footage shared, we have seen people crowding, others fighting for the food because it was not distributed in an orderly manner, people seeking political mileage” Enanga said

He says the exercise should now shift from individual distribution to District task force teams.

He explains that this will not only eliminate disorganization but also check if food items being distributed are fit for human consumption.

”but the district task force has to ensure the food distributed is deemed fit for human consumption. Some people might give out beans and posho with high levels of aflatoxins, As much as we do appreciate this act, we want to urge the good Samaritans, political groups, and other well-wishers to work in coordination with the district task forces. .”Enanga said.

Several well-off individuals and politicians have recently been spotted giving out relief food donations to needy persons.

Over the weekend, Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament, Francis Zaake donated food items including posho, rice, and matooke among others to vulnerable locals in his constituency.

On Sunday rGlory of Christ Church in Kawaala also gave out relief food items to families to help them through the Covid-induced lockdown.

There have also been reports that PM Robinnah Nabbanja has discouraged Covid food donations for breach of safety regulations.
