Police in Kampala has on Wednesday morning launched an offensive operation to disperse increasing numbers of persons and vehicles operating illegally in town.

The action-packed operation is targeting traders in various malls and arcades, hawkers, saloon operators among other businesses operating despite a 42-day lockdown.

With less than 10 days to the lockdown, police say there is an influx of traders who are opening shops, while others are conducting business behind closed doors.

This has compelled police to engage in running battles with people and seal off several buildings like Aponye mall and carry out arrests on perpetrators of the COVID 19 measures on the lockdown.

The operation is being led by the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Denis Namuwoza.

In addition to that, police are also targetting vehicles that are moving in the Central Business District without permission and Boda Boda’s carrying passengers.

Police have promised to pluck off numberplates and impound cars whose drivers are not on the Data system of essential vehicles supposed to carry workers.

However, intimate sources who prefer anonymity have told us the operation was launched following intelligence information indicating that the National Unity Platform -NUP strongman Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine had planned to storm the City center under unclear circumstances.
