Police in Jinja City is investigating circumstances under which a cop opened fire on a 16year old boy during a public scuffle in Mutai Village.
The deceased Nelson Nabugere, is a student at Lwanda High School in Jinja.
Police says they are holding the suspect identified as Musaidizi and will present him before the curts of law on Monday.
However, the police say Musaidizi accidentally killed Nabugere with a stray bullet that was meant to disperse a crowd of rowdy locals who were pelting stones at him.
The Kiira Region Police commander, Dauda Hiriga, says it was an act of self-defense after locals opened a fight near the police post.
“On Saturday at 9.45 PM, police in Mutai got a call from residents that there was a fight near the police station. Our officer called Corp Musaidizi went to find out the cause but when he got to the scene residents started throwing stones at him. In a bid to defend himself, he started firing live bullets in the air,’’ Mr Hiriga said.
He further explains that another person only identified as Ashraf was also injured in the same scuffle and is currently admitted at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.
