The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has directed the Director of Traffic to embark on aggressive traffic guidelines on all motorists.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says the decision was informed by an incident on Sunday where Bods boda riders ganged up on a man for accidentally knocking one of them.
Enanga says the Boda boda riders acted out of order and it has become a growing habit for riders to attack other motorists.
“It was triggered by emotions from both sides, the conduct of the bodas shows a complete lack of regard for motorists on the road and this has turned into a habit whereby if a boda rider is knocked or involved in an accident, you find the others of the boda boda movement ganging up,” he said.
Police has so far arrested two suspects and is hunting down a group of Boda boda riders or others accused of lynching 40-year-old Aziz Bashir, a former driver with the United Nations (UN).
The deceased was beaten to death by a mob near Lyna Primary School in Mengo, Kampala, after he knocked down a boda boda while in pursuit of another who had scratched his vehicle, a Toyota Allex UBK 393D.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigire, Bashir had an initial altercation with an unidentified Boda boda who scratched his vehicle and refused to settle the matter with him.
“It is from there that two motorcycles shielded the rider, who was involved in a traffic accident with Bashir. The rider left the scene but as the deceased pursued the alleged rider, he knocked another motorcyclist,” Owoyesigire explained.
Enanga says they are going to review all CCTV footage to ensure that all those involved are arrested.
