Reckless mother survives beating

Drama unfolded this morning at Mengo Magistrate’s Court when a mother left a sleeping 7-month-old baby unattended on a court bench for two hours.

The baby boy, clothed in zebra print attire and wrapped in a white sheet with flowers, slept peacefully, oblivious of the chaos about to unfold.

After close to an hour of noticing the baby lying unattended on the bench, concerned persons present at court came to the conclusion that he was abandoned and raised an alarm. This prompted one of the court clerks to inquire from the security guard on the whereabouts of the mother.

It was later established that the missing mother, whose name is withheld, was catering to both the baby and her husband Richard Kalibala who was detained in one of the court cells awaiting charges.

The mother, of light-skin tone, probably in her 30’s and wearing a little black dress, returned to a crowd of curious onlookers surrounding her baby.

Looking nervous and tensed up, with a black polythene bag in her hand, she said, “I wouldn’t abandon my baby. I am sorry for the confusion. I was just out.”

The court clerk threatened to arrest her if she dumped her baby again.
