The Nakawa Magistrate’s Court has further remanded eight suspects to Luzira Upper and Kigo prisons after their lawyers failed to appear.

The eight (8) suspects are; Yasin Nyanzi, Hussein Sserubula, Muhammad Kagugube, Sirimani Kisambira, Abudalllah-Aziz Ramadhan Dunka, Kamada Walusimbi, Habib Ramadhan Marjan and Huzaifah Wampa.

These are implicated in the attempted murder of Gen. Katumba Wamala, his bodyguard Sgt. Khalid Kuboit and Boniface Mucunguzi and indicted with the murder of Brenda Nantongo, the daughter of Gen. Katumba Wamala and his driver Sgt. Haruna Kayondo on June 1, 2021 along Kisota road in Kisasi, a city suburb.

The suspects appeared in Court on Thursday morning at 10:50am via Zoom technology for the mention of their case. However, the lawyers representing them from Wameli and Company Advocates, were not present.

Court was at full capacity with the relatives, children and friends of the suspects in attendance under strict Covid-19 guidelines.

Prosecution led by State Attorney, Rose Aoja, told the presiding Magistrate, Adwori Ponsiano, that investigations were still ongoing and there was nothing to communicate further. His Worship Ponsiano then adjourned the case to November 4, 2021 as the state concluded its investigations.

Relatives to the suspects asked for a chance to speak to their people and they were given a chance of 15 minutes after which they sadly matched out without a word to the media.

Previously, their lawyers had asked the state to drop charges against the suspects if they don’t have evidence.

In September 2021, the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) issued 18 new charges against 6 out of the 8 suspects. The 6 appeared before the Nakawa Magistrates Court in Kampala.

The charges included murder and aggravated robbery linked to an attack on Cheap General Hardware at Nansana East One Zone in Wakiso on May 29, 2019. Four people were killed and UGX 385 million was stolen in this incident.

The six are jointly charged with Hussein Sserubula and Nyanzi Yusuf Siraje for the attempted assassination of Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, the murders of his daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver Sgt. Haruna Kayondo. They are also charged with the murders of Boniface Mucunguzi and Sgt Khalid Kuboit all of which occurred on June 1, 2021 at Kisaasi Central Zone in Kampala.
