Rusty bomb in Sembabule
The Joint Security operatives were swift in detonating a rusty bomb discovered in a bush in Sembabule district on Wednesday evening.
The rusty bomb classified as a projectile was taken by the Counter Terrorism police to a safer place where it was detonated.
Police Counter-Terrorism and the Bomb Squad personnel responded to a distress call from residents in Nakasagazi village, Kasongi Parish in Kawanda sub-country to retrieve a bomb that was discovered in a forest.
The rusty metallic device was reportedly first discovered by children who had gone to collect firewood abandoned in the forest. The children, who believed they had found a worthy item, carried the device to a nearby butcher to be weighed before they could sell it off as scrap in exchange for meat .
However, a suspicious local saw it and informed the local authorities in time for immediate action.
According to Ben Lubega, the Nakasagazi LCI Chairman, they promptly called the police and the army to take over the situation. He explains that they did not know that such a deadly weapon existed in their community.
