Teachers’ salary

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Mathias Mpuuga has appealed the government to address the proposed selective
increment of salaries for some categories of teachers.

On August 24, 2021, the government announced  that cabinet had passed a resolution to increase salaries of scientists,
including STEM teachers, whose salaries will shoot to 4 million shillings monthly, in the 2021/22 financial year.

President Museveni while delivering his address at the national celebration of World Teachers’ Day at Kololo Ceremonial
Grounds in Kampala, repeated that there will be no pay rise for Arts and humanities teachers.

Now the leader of opposition in Parliament says the selective salary increment threatens the education system and should
be reconsidered.
“this is causing a rift between science teachers and teachers on Humanities, this
proposal of selective salary increment is now threatening to break down school administrations as lower rank employees are paid significantly better than their supervisors. We support that there is equal remuneration of workers of
the same qualifications and experience,”

The LOP has also recommended a review of the taxation policy to offer tax relief to private educational institutions for at least a year.

ahead of time to take care of the much-needed renovations so that the school environment is prepared for teaching and learning.

He has ashed the govt  to draft a widespread recovery plan for the education sector ahead of the scheduled
re-opening of educational institutions next year.

Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the Minister of State for Primary Education has welcomed the Opposition statement, saying that some of the suggestions are already being addressed by her ministry.

She added that at an appropriate time, the Ministry of Education and Sports will issue a statement on the
matter. She assured the parliament that come January 10th, 2022, all schools will re-open.
