FDC on Kayunga violence

The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC Party has faulted the Electoral commission for fostering violent campaigns in the Kayunga LC5 by elections.

President Yoweri Museveni was in Kayunga on Tuesday to campaign for his NRM candidate Andrew Muwonge in the two sub counties of Kayonza and Busaana. His arrival led security forces to block campaigns of NUP candidates whose venue was canceled by the Electoral commission.

Security personnel fired live bullets and teargas to disperse hundreds of NUP supporters in Kayunga Town Council who were protesting the cancellation of the final campaigns of their candidate Harriet Nakwede.

FDC has condemned acts of violence meted on members of the National Unity Platform during the final that left some people injured and others arrested.

FDC Deputy Spokesperson John Kikonyogo says that the Electoral Commission conspired with the government to deny residents of Kayunga a peaceful election.

Kikonyogo says Ugandans have suffered the brunt of violence and various irregularities in elections. He says go against everything Ugandans sacrificed in the bush to send away the past governments.

“We have been victims since time immemorial,we have suffered the brunt of violence and using money in the elections.we believe in free and fair elections but what is happening in Kayunga is not what people sacrificed for to chase away the past government, the cost of people going to the bush where we lost more than half million people is because of violence in elections. Dont take us back “ Kikonyogo said

During the protests, Francis Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP, the NUP contestant Nakwede and several others sustained injuries.

The Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto says the seven NUP supporters are in custody for conducting an illegal procession in the middle of the road and disrupting business.

The race is tight between the NRM and NUP, however, other candidates including Anthony Waddimba fDemocratic Party-DP, Boniface Bandikubi, Majid Nyanzi, and Jamil Kamogaall independents are in the race.
