The National Resistance Movement candidate Andrew Muwonge has emerged winner in the Kayunga LC5 bi elections .The results in the hotly contested polls were announced on Friday morning by the returning officer for Kayunga electoral commission Kyobutungi Jennifer.
Muwonge beat five other contestants with 3180 polls, his NUP rival Nakweede Hariet who came in second place with 31308.Others include Nyanzi Hamid 1287 votes ,Musisi Boniface 407 votes ,Kamoga Jamil 279 and the Democratic Party candidate Wadimba Anthony with 158 votes.
According to Kyobutungi, out of 65332 voters who participated in the elections 66275 ballot papers were valid, 947 were invalid and 91 ballots were spoiled.
Prior to the announcement, the National Unity Platform Candidate Nakwede has protested the delayed declaration of results by the Electoral Commission.
The commission started tallying the results at around 8 pm on Thursday Proceeding with the count until Friday morning. Preliminary results had placed Nakwede in the lead with 35,212 votes.
NUP members have largely protested the election process describing it as baised, rigged and discriminatory.
Last night, Nakwede’s tally agent John Mary Ssebuufu was carried out of the centre by the Counter-Terrorism Police personnel for challenging what he termed as doctored results from Kayonza sub-county.
“They can play whichever game they may want but desist from alternating figures. People of Kayunga have already spoken and the entire country has seen it.” Nakwede said on Thursday night.
During polls on Thursday, there were reports of ballot stuffing with the NUP camp claiming that the NRM had sneaked in over 500 pre ticked ballot papers at various polling stations.
At Kyato-Mwoloola and Nakyesanja polling stations in Kayonza sub county and Seeta-Nyiize in Kangulumira sub county voting was halted after pre ticked ballot papers appeared in favour of Muwonge .
At Nakyesanja and Kyato, both presiding officers were alone at the stations but had boxes stuffed with ballot papers ticked for the NRM candidate.
Meanwhile at Kangulumira, specifically Nakyesanja polling station, the box was stuffed with over 462 ballot papers before even the biometric machine was brought to the station.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the Electoral Commission Chairperson said they had dispatched a team to investigate the incidents.
“I have received reports of alleged ballot stuffing, some people claim by 7am ,ballot papers were already full .Our teams are verifying these reports and if we ascertain that it is true we shall take all the necessary action and follow the law,” he said
