A report by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety reveals that 474 million shillings was gathered from traffic offenders during Christmas celebrations .

In total, 5,720 cars and motorcycles were impounded between December 23rd and 26th, 3,070 drivers and riders were fined.

The traffic police spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima, explains that 644 drivers were fined Shillings 200,000 for driving recklessly,422 drivers were issued with Express penalty Scheme (EPS) tickets of Shs 100,000 for driving cars in dangerous mechanical condition, 235 fined for driving without valid permits, 164 fined for over speeding and 157 penalized for not wearing seat belts.

Others include 1,251 cars and 2,071 motorcycles were impounded in the first three days of Christmas week.

On Monday,Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson said many drivers and riders were arrested for breach of 7 pm curfew regulations.

Enanga says at least 1,557 pedestrians were arrested but 839 were cautioned and released.

Police has warned the public against flouting all to the guidelines on Covid 19 as the New Year’s Day celebrations draw closer. Police they will deploy on all roads and major places to ensure observation of regulations.
