Grief has engulfed locals in Namutumba district after a Women Council Chairperson committed suicide for defaulting on a loan.

The deceased Gertrude Babirye, a resident of Mpolya-Bigele village in Kiwanyi sub-county of Namutumba district,was found hanging to a rope on a mango tree within her garden on Monday morning.

The deceased had reportedly acquired a loan amounting to 230,000 Shillings from Mpolya-Bigele village saving group, but failed to pay it back within the stipulated time of six months.

At the time of her death, Babirye was living with her five year old grand child. The grand child (names withheld) told neighbours that the deceased left the house by 5:00 am saying she was going to the garden but never returned.

“Grandmother left very early and told me to meet her in the garden, but I alerted residents after seeing her hanging on a mango tree,” he says.

The Kiwanyi L.C.3 chairperson, Patrick Nabongo says that dozens of people have fled from several villages over mismanagement of village loans.

Busoga East’s regional police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula confirms the incident, adding that scenes of crime officers have been dispatched to inspect the place and an autopsy procedure shall be conducted in the due course.
