A mentally derailed man in Kyegegwa District, Rwenzori region has been arrested for attacking and hitting a police officer with a stone, killing him.
Ronald Kasirye ,28, stormed Kyegegwa police station on Saturday night and started pelting stones at police officers on duty, in the process, one of the stones hit a constable on duty cracking his skull. The deceased has been identified as constable, Francis Tindyebwa.
Uganda Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says the Kasirye is known to be a mentally ill man who has been attacking the police post in a similar manner for a long time now. Enanga says PC Tindyebwa fell victim because he was guarding the entrance of the police station.
“In one of the many stones thrown at police officers at the counter, a Special Police Constable, Tindyebwa who was manning the entrance to the police station was hit with a stone on the head which cracked his skull.”
He adds that the deceased was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday.
Enanga says police is faced with a challenge of dealing with mentally ill persons who present with an aggressive and dangerous character. He has called on the Ministry of Health needs to device means to address this challenge.
