Members of Parliament have overwhelmingly elected former government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa as the Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
In highly attended special sitting at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on March 25, 2022, Tayebwa, also a member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM ) beat his opposition rival Moses Bitek who subscribes to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Tayebwa polled 325 votes against okot Bitek who polled 82 votes. The Speaker of Parliament while presiding over her first official business in Parliament declared Tayebwa duly elected Deputy Speaker.
President Yoweri Museveni proceeded to hand him instruments of power shortly after he had sworn his oath to office.
In his maiden speech to legislators, Tayebwa apologized to MP’s from Northern sub region for blasting them over their demand for Speaker from their region.
