Police in Kampala have revealed that the CCTV cameras aided in mapping out a notorious criminal gang behind boda boda robberies.
On May 13, video footage from CCTV cameras near Victoria University captured a gang of boda boda riders waylaying a passenger on another motorcycle Reg .no UEZ 341D before inhumanely punching him and robbing his bag with cash in it.
The victim who is in a good condition has been identified as Enock Turyasingura,31, a technician at Payway’s branch at Forest Mall in Lugogo . He was returning home to Makindye from work.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire says one of the suspects in the incident was netted by counter terrorism officer after he attempted to flee into drainage channels. The suspect currently detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala is Sula Kavuma, alias Muzeeyi , 18, and a resident of Nansana.
Owoyesigyire says police were swift in rushing to the crime scene after officers at the CCTV monitoring immediately informed the area OC.
“The CPS CCTV monitoring centre communicated immediately to the area OC , ASP Akampurira Isaac, and informed him of the happenings. The area police rushed to the scene and reinforced the counter terrorism officer Constable Benard Wanyire who was guarding at Victoria University,” Owoyesigyire said.

According to the Police report, the CCTV camera footage was played back and analyzed, revealing that the victim had been trailed by a group of seven motorcycles. During the analysis, five of the seven motorcycles involved in the crime were ably identified by the CCTV analysis team.
Owoyesigyire says the suspect has been able to name other members of his gang involved in the crime and police are hunting them down.
Kampala has been on the spot over increasing incidents of broad day boda boda robberies,between February and March 2022, two separate incidents were registered at Buganda Road and another on Prince Charles Drive involving a similar kind of robbery.
On February 25, one Dawit Kasa, a diplomat with the Ethiopian Embassy, was robbed of his phones worth Shs2.8 million and a laptop and later assaulted by a gang of Boda boda riders.
Four suspects who participated in the separate incidents were later arrested by police.
