Naigaga Annet, a local businesswoman dealing in Roasted Maize and Yellow Bananas in Wakiso district is mourning the loss of four children who perished in a fire outbreak at home while she was away.
The deceased, all residents of Kawuku cell, Mulawa parish, Kira division, Kira Municipality, aged between 3 and 8 years died on Thursday morning while preparing to go to school.
The deceased have been identified as Namulindwa Even, 8, Kibuuka Isan 6, her children and two other grandchildren Nansubuga Noreen 3, and Cynthia.
Naigaga claims she left the minors at home inside a two-bedroom house with their elder sister, 12-year-old Nakkasi Catherine who was preparing to go to school. Naigaga says she left home early in the morning to go and fetch water from a nearby well about 500 metres and returned to a burning house.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson says Naigaga sounded an alarm that attracted neighbours after she saw a lot of smoke coming from the house.
The four children were crying for help inside the house and the door was closed. She made an alarm and attempted to enter and rescue the children, but the fire was too much.
Owoyesigyire told our reporter Minah Nalule that all the four children were crying for help inside the house and failed to open the closed door. He says she made an alarm and attempted to enter and rescue the children, but the fire was too much.
He adds preliminary investigations indicate that there was a fueled motorcycle inside the house, hence the big fire. The four bodies have all been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for Postmortem.
“It is also alleged that Nakasi Catherine who is the eldest child could have left the candle burning inside the house before she left for school.More details into this unfortunate incident will be availed as soon as they are available.” he says
