The leader of pressure group People’s Front for Transition, Kiiza Besigye has delivered his martyr’s day message to the public from the coffers at Luzira Upper Prison.
The Opposition strongman Besigye was thrown into jail last week after he rejected 30 Million Shillings cash bail ruling granted to him by the Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate. He was slapped with charges of inciting violence on Thursday last week as he appeared before Grade One Magistrate Sienna Owomugisha.
However he ditched the bail ruling on grounds that it was ‘outrageous’ and ‘unfair’ for the court to demand he pays an exorbitant sum of money while his co-accused paid only one million shillings each as bail for the same charge.
Earlier this week, Besigye’s lawyers Erias Lukwago appealed the bail ruling in High Court and awaits a ruling on the matter on Monday June 6, 2022 after both Defence and Prosecution have filed written submissions.
However, in a brief letter posted on the Forum for Democratic Change social media platforms, Besigye has penned a message to the public assuring them of his safety .
Prosecution states that on May 24th, 2022 at Arua Park Muno Village Shauriyako Parish in Central Division in Kampala District, without lawful excuse at an assembly made statements to the members of the public indicating or implying that it would be desirable to demonstrate, an act which was reportedly calculated to lead to destruction or damage to property.
Besigye was arrested from Arua Park where he was addressing crowds and taken to the Central Police Station in Kampala. He was later transferred to Nagalama Police Station where he spent a night before being jailed.
