Police in Kampala has launched investigations into circumstances under which two naughty learners set ablaze school dormitories at two separate schools in Kampala.
The misbehaving pupils aged 11 and 16 belong to Young Elite Primary School in Kasokoso and MH Junior School Nabbingo, respectively, have both admitted to starting fires at both schools because they were fed up of learning.
One of the pupils identified as Mutwama Aminadabu, a 17 year p.7 pupil of Young Elite School, Kasokoso, Kira Municipality damaged properties worth 10 million shillings after setting his property on fire in protest of a decision by the parents to forcefully send him to school.
Fred Enanga the Uganda Police Spokesperson says Mutwama initially left school for home with his belongings and explained to his parents that he was no longer interested in studying. However, his enraged parents refused to listen to him forced him to return to school.
Enanga says Mutwama returned to school and set his belongings on fire that later spread and burnt 7 other mattresses, clothes school uniforms, 4 beds, 1 dispense and part of the roof, causing loss worth 10 million shillings.
The second incident happened on June 04, 2022 at about 5.48 am, when one Muyanja Anani Aramathan, a P.4 pupil of MH Junior School Nabbingo, Ituga Cell, Kyengera Town Council, informed his matron Nalwanga Cissy, about a fire outbreak in the dormitory.
Enanga explains that the matron found the fire had just started burning the bed of Muyanja Anani and immediately put our by neighbors and the shool staff.
He says a matchbox was recovered under Muyanja’s bed, and it was established that the naughty pupil never liked school and thought burning down the dormitory could cause learners to be sent home.
” We urge Headteachers and school staff to closely watch out for pupils who have a dislike for classed and the school and seek services of counsellors, parents and guardians, to help minimize the risks of arson in schools.” Enanga says
