Police in Kabale are hunting for a driver of a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin on the run for knocking dead a Rwandese national.

The deceased has been identified as Habiyambere Emanuel, a resident of Gicumbi Byumba District in Rwanda. Habiyambere met his death on June 18, 2022 while riding his motorbike along Mwanjari Katuna road in Kabale Municipality.

Eye witnesses allege that the deceased was over speeding when he rammed into the motorbike from the rear, killing him on spot. The driver immediately abandoned the car and fled the scene before irate locals could gang up against him.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson says the deceased has since been handed over to his relatives for burial as investigations into the matter continue.

Maate says police is currently looking for the unidentified driver of the car and will charge him with murder once investigations have concluded. He says the car has been impounded and parked in the police yard pending an IOV inspection.

Incidents of road carnage have been on the rise in recent months and are attached to over-speeding or driving cars in poor mechanical state.

There were 398 accident victims during this period and out of these 103 people died and 295 sustained injuries.

Meanwhile at least 12 people were killed on average every day in 2021. Police have attributed the biggest percentage of road crashes to human error including reckless driving, over-speeding and driving vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions.

Traffic Police spokesperson Faridah Nampiima has continuously urged users to always have discipline on the road but urged passengers to also report bad driving.
