Police at Kampala Metropolitan have explained that the heavy deployment of its personnel at strategic points in the City is to avert any planned protests.

Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson says they have deployed accordingly to deter any wrong elements from going ahead with any unlawful plans.

This comes as the force received intelligence information that a group of people facilitated by some opposition politicians were plotting demonstrations over irregularities in registration of Boda bodas, fuel and high commodity prices.

He says the group plans to petition the Speaker of Parliament on the illegal registration of Boda boda riders by Kampala Capital City Authority, KCCA and fees charged against boda boda riders.

He has asked those planning the demonstration to use lawful means well established in the Public Order Management Act to avoid any inconveniences.

“We have received information that political factions are spearheading this illegal demonstration. We would like to warn the organizers and participants that they will be arrested and prosecuted for organizing an illegal demonstration. “ he says

On Monday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga warned that selected individuals and groups were plotting unlawful processions and assemblies, as a way of expressing discontent against the surge in commodity prices and fuel.
Also durting a press briefing on Monday, Members of Parliament on opposition questioned amove by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to register all boda boda in Kampala city and reduce the number to 7000 only.

Shadow minister for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, also Rubaga North MP, Abubaker Kawalya claimed the government is hiding under the pretext of registering Boda boda riders and returning hawkers to the streets to deploy security operatives.

“Are we turning this city into a military city? We are not going to allow this impunity. We call upon any Ugandans, most of the boda boda cyclists who are going to be affected to be very vigilant. We are planning to move a motion on the floor of Parliament but we have to fight for our rights,” he said.
