UGX 200 debt

David Muhumuza, 17, is nursing grave injuries to his right ear after he failed to repay a debt of two hundred shillings.

Muhumuza, a resident of Miirya Sub-county in Masindi district, allegedly went to a local cinema on Sunday and asked to watch a movie worth 200 shillings on credit while promising to pay the money on Monday.

However, he failed to raise the money the following day, prompting the business owner, identified as Tugume, to confront him.

Tugume, in a fit of rage bit off Muhumuza’s ear after the two got into a heated argument. Locals allege that Tugume called Muhumuza a “poor church rat” who can’t afford to clear a simple debt, and that Muhumuza retaliated by calling his debtor a cheat.

Tugume, who is also a money collector, bit off the ear and fled into hiding, leaving Muhumuza in excruciating pain.

Imelda Kateba, Muhumuza’s grandmother, says Tugume acted in such a crude manner and should have reported the matter to police for action to be taken against her grandchild instead. She fears that her grandson could become deaf following the injuries inflicted on his ear.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson has confirmed the incident, adding that the hunt for the suspect has commenced.
