Kagabo in hotter sauce
The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has started investigations into a case of bribery allegations involving members of the 11th Parliament.

This comes after the Bukoto South Member of Parliament, Twaha Kagabo, returned a sum of UGX 40million to Parliament, alleging that it was secretly distributed to MPs as a token of appreciation at the residence of the Speaker of Parliament in June 2022.

Kagabo presented a briefcase of hard cash worth UGX 40million to the Shadow Cabinet headed by Leader of Opposition Hon. Mathias Mpuuga. He was, however, directed to refund the money to its original source.

Consequently, the Speaker of Parliament during plenary on Tuesday directed that the MP be presented before the committee for Rules and Discipline for Code of Conduct and that the matter be investigated.

She says his actions abuse the institution of Parliament.

“This House is not for playing politics, he has to show us who gave him the money…from where and what the money was meant for. It is our responsibility to protect the image of this House. When you start that kind of behaviour, you will have to face the law,” Among said.

Now, the IGG has also picked interest in the matter, and arrested Hon Twaha after the Parliamentary police handed him over.

Ali Munira, the Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations at the Inspectorate of Government says the MP will be arraigned before the courts of law when  investigations are completed.

“It is alleged that the MP had received a bribe of UGX 40million. The Inspectorate of Government received a call from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Parliament about the matter and we are going to investigate and if found culpable, will be arraigned in court,” said Munira.

Munira explained that the IG would prefer charges against the legislators once their investigations are completed.
