12 market vendors have been confirmed dead following an accident at Alomayin swamp along Alakaituk-Amuria Road in Amuria district.
The Traffic and Road Safety Directorate has confirmed the incident saying that the territorial traffic police at Amuria Central Police Station yesterday registered a single fatal accident at about 2:42am.
According to Traffic and Road Safety Spokesperson Faridah Nampiima, a motor vehicle registration number UBA 670V Fuso was carrying market vendors when it lost control and overturned, killing 12 passengers on the spot while six were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established as efforts to remove the wreckage are underway, Nampiima said.
“We want to caution all lorry drivers to desist from carrying passengers on lorries as it’s illegal,” Nampiima warned.
