SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to seeing all the action from the 2022 Diamond League event in Lausanne, the Athletissima in Switzerland on Friday 26th August.
SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Athletics fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.
The 10th leg of the 2022 Diamond League series is Athletissima in Lausanne, an event first held in 1977. Over the years, this meeting has produced no less than three world records: Leroy Burrell ran 9.85s for the 100m in 1994; Yelena Isinbayeva topped 4.93m for the pole vault in 2005; and Liu Xiang ran 12.88s for the 110m hurdles in 2006.
This year’s Athletissima is set to feature no less than 14 world champions and 12 gold medallists across the disciplines. The headline event will undoubtedly be the women’s 100m, where Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah will challenge compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price for glory.
This race will bring together almost all the finalists of the last World Championships in Eugene. Thompson-Herah is none other than the triple Olympic champion in charge in the sprint (100m, 200m and 4×100 m) and holder of the second best time in history in the 100m (10.54s).
Shericka Jackson became the second fastest 200m athlete in history (21.45s) last month during her world title in Eugene, and as a reminder, Fraser-Pryce is a five-time world champion in the 100m, an unprecedented feat.
Another event to watch is the men’s 200m, with Michael Norman (reigning double world champion in the 400m and 4×400m with a personal best of 19.70 in the 200m) and the 20-year-old Liberian Joseph Fahnbulleh (fourth in Eugene), set to star alongside Noah Lyles and Erriyon Knighton.
Also watch out for Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan in the 100m hurdles following her recent world record of 12.12s in the semifinals of the World Championships, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali and Ethiopian Lamecha Girma in the 3,000m steeplechase, as well as Kenyan star Timothy Cheruiyot in the 1500m.
“We had not had such a density of participation at the highest level since 2012, the year when the meeting was sold out with Usain Bolt,” said Jacky Delapierre, the boss of Athletissima.
