This round of Premier League matches opens on early Saturday afternoon with a crunch match for both Southampton and Manchester United, as they look to ease the pressure built by their poor starts to the season.

“Everyone knew the task. We had a bad season last season. We’ve got a new manager trying to put his philosophy on the team but when we don’t get it right we look far too open,” said United skipper Harry Maguire.

He added, “I think fight and, first and foremost, hard work. Running and fighting for the badge to give the fans excitement and also a team to be proud of.”

Saturday’s late afternoon kick-offs feature champions Manchester City at home to Crystal Palace, Liverpool welcoming Bournemouth to Anfield, and Chelsea chasing a first home win of the season when they welcome Leicester City. The Foxes’ manager Brendan Rodgers admits that his club will have to endure a torrid time after a lack of signings in the transfer window.

“It obviously feels a little strange not to be signing anyone,” he explained. “However I understand the predicament the club is in, so from that I can’t then get too down and too disappointed about it.

“The reality is there, we’ve been unable to do any business. I obviously want the club to be up there fighting and challenging for European football, but that’s going to take investment, and if we can’t do that then I also have to be realistic as well.”

Saturday’s late game is a London derby between Arsenal and Fulham, while Sunday’s trio of matches features Aston Villa at home to West Ham United, Newcastle United visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a tricky test for Tottenham Hotspur as they head to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest.

“This is a ground that can help you win games,” said Forest manager Steve Cooper, who will be hoping his side can turn over Spurs to wrap up the weekend’s action.

SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the headline fixture arrives at the end of the round and sees Valencia welcome Atletico Madrid to Estadio de Mestalla on the evening of Monday 29th August.

Valencia have Gennaro Gattuso at the helm and the Italian will be eager to lock horns with counterpart Diego Smeone, who was a similarly bullish midfielder in his playing career.

“Of course I greatly respect Atletico and their manager – he has been at the club for a long time and achieved a great success,” said Gattuso. “But we must leave our respect when we walk out onto the field and look to play as equals. The three points can be ours, especially at home.”

The round opens on Friday with Giron and Real Betis at home to Celta Vigo and Osasuna respectively, while Saturday’s key game see Real Sociedad head to Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero to take on Elche. La Real are hoping winger Takefusa Kubo continues the excellent form he has shown early in the season.

“Kubo is a great player and he has a lot of talent and quality. It’s as if he’s been with us for three years. Debut, goal and work. That is what he has shown,” said manager Imanol Alguacil. “I like both the inside and the top. He adapts to everything and is a great player. He can show a lot at Real.”

Sunday features heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid in action. Barcelona will welcome Real Valladolid to Camp Nou for the early-evening clash, while Real face Espanyol away from home in the late kick-off.

Barca’s controversial but effective work in the transfer market has raised expectations that they will compete for the title this season, and manager Xavi has embraced that: “I love high expectations and pressure. I don’t want to look for excuses. The main goal is to win titles. The fight must continue.”

The top clash from Serie A in this round sees Juventus welcome Roma to the Allianz Stadium in Turin on the early evening of Saturday 27th August. The Bianconeri are naturally considered one of the top title contenders, but the Giallorossi have joined them in that respect, given the boost of confidence gained by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho is happy with the club’s transfer market work, but wishes they could have done more: “Evaluating now when the market is still open is premature. I want to wait. When you use the word frustration you go way overboard.

“I signed four players and an excellent young goalkeeper. Frustration is too big of a word. I am very satisfied because these are all players that I like very much. I’ve approved of every single one of them.”

The round of Italian football opens on Friday evening with Monza welcoming Udinese, before Lazio and Internazionale square off in the capital for an eagerly-anticipated clash. Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi hopes his team clicks into top gear for the visit to Le Aquile.

“Our physical condition will improve week by week, this is natural,” explained the Inter boss. “We will also adjust the way we play as we go on, with players coming in and out of the team. Everyone is a work in progress at this stage of the season, but there are important games and important points available.”

Saturday, aside from the Juve v Roma clash, also features champions AC Milan at home to Bologna, with new star Charles De Ketelaere already making an impression in the red and black stripes.

“He [De Ketelaere] looked good, immediately with great desire. He’s not only technical, but he reads and understands the game,” said former Milan star Giampaolo Pazzini. “He proved to be available. He’s able to play in all three roles behind the striker, I was impressed by the personality with which he went to ask his teammates for the ball: with a sold out San Siro that isn’t easy.”

Sunday wraps up the round with four games, the pick of which sees Fiorentina and Napoli meet in a potential thriller at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence.
