Viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing one of Africa’s top footballers, Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi, in action for Everton in a Premier League clash this coming weekend.
DStv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.
Iwobi has long been a fixture in the Premier League, making 190 appearances in the competition for Arsenal and Everton since his debut back in 2015. However, the 26-year-old Super Eagles star has never looked as assured and confident as he has since the start of the 2022-23 season – with a positional switch leading to his rise in prominence.
Generally deployed as a winger, forward or even wingback earlier in his career, Iwobi has settled into a central midfield role for the Toffees and has excelled, using his passing and mobility to great effect.
The arrival of Frank Lampard at Everton back in January was the key to unlocking Iwobi’s potential as a midfielder, and the Nigerian had given major credit to his boss.
“We have been playing really well. The performances were good, it was just about getting the result. It’s good to get a win going into the international break,” said Iwobi after starring in the team’s first win of the season, a 1-0 home triumph over West Ham United in mid-September.
He added, “I didn’t get off to a great start [at Everton]. I always have the mindset to prove people wrong. The manager allows me to express myself.”
In fact, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has picked out Iwobi – in his role as a deeper midfield creator – as exactly the kind of player the Gunners are missing right now. Which, of course, has major irony given that Iwobi played for Arsenal’s first team for four years before transferring to Everton in 2019!
“I’m so pleased with the way it’s going for him,” Wright said. “I remember Arsenal fans, it’s the same thing they did with Oxlade-Chamberlain, they ridiculed him. His ball progression and work rate, what Frank has now recognised him and put him there, listen to the Everton fans when he’s doing his work, they are adoring him now. I’m loving the way it’s working out for Iwobi.”
He added, “You look at his work rate, it’s unbelievable. It’s the kind of intensity that Mikel wants now and needs now, we need that, [Arsenal] need somebody who can press like that.”
