Kidney harvest

Police in Kampala have on Monday cast aside reports that it carried out a CT scan on one Muhammed Kabanda revealing he was born with one Kidney.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga rubbished reports in the media indicating that Police Director Health Services, AIGP Moses Byaruhanga interpreted a CT scan report from police to Kabanda’s distressed relatives.

Enanga explains that the findings of the alleged CT scan were carried out by the Kampala Imaging Centre and later interpreted by AIGP Moses Byaruhanga. The CT scan revealed Kabanda was born with one kidney, a condition called “Renal Agenesis”.

“Some of the colleagues from the media were quoting our director for police health services AIGP Dr.Moses Byaruhanga for having come out to inform Muhammad Kabanda and relatives that the CT scan report was indicating that he was born with one kidney. The CT scan report was not of the police,” Enanga said.

He says despite the findings of Kampala Imaging Center, investigations are still ongoing by specialists and experts from the medical counsel to ascertain if Kabanda was indeed born with one Kidney.

“These people went to Kampala Imaging Centre and did a CT scan , they came with the report to the director health services who helped interpret it. He explained to them the findings of the CT scan report which were clearly indicating that Kabanda was born with one kidney.  It was an observation from specialists of Kampala Imaging Centre.”

This development comes as Kabanda and his relatives have dismissed the CT scan report, insisting they were conned by the hospital.

Kabanda, 25, a resident of Gangu village in Wakiso district last week pinned Old Kampala Hospital for removing his left kidney illegally.

Kabanda and relatives allege that when he was brought to the hospital unconscious from a boda boda accident, he awoke to a scar on his left side of the stomach creating suspicion his kidney was removed. A CT scan conducted proved he had no kidney.

“I asked the doctor why I had incisions and bandages wrapped around my lower left abdomen area and he told me they had plucked some part off the area to use it on the injured part of the head. This left me confused.”Kabanda said

The management of Old Kampala has since dismissed these allegations of illegal Kidney removal.

Ann Katulege, the Old Kampala Hospital spokesperson said last week that the case is under investigation by both the Police and Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.

She stated that the final scans and results will be taken from Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Association Council because they are the ones who do a neutral investigation.
