S.3 boy netted sitting UCE exams

A 17 year old senior three student from Janan Luwum secondary school in Kabalagala, Makindye Division has landed in hot sauce after he was busted doing Uganda Certificate Examinations (UCE) for a student at another school in Kawempe.

Emmanuel Bagenda was nabbed by Uganda National Examination Board, (UNEB) invigilators at Kawempe Standard School located in Kazo Angola ward, sitting in for one Huda Namuwonge, 19, Senior Four repeater.

According to police, invigilators noticed a loophole during the Mathematics Paper 2 on Monday afternoon, when Namuwonge’s index number No. U1002/099 changed.

The invigilators were puzzled after realizing that the duo shared the same index number U1002/099 in the first mathematics paper and changed numbers in paper two that same afternoon.

“This brought confusion among the invigilation team in the second paper of Mathematics where now Bagenda used U1002/099 and Namuwonge used U1002/098,” a security source said.

The invigilators at Kawempe Standard School were compelled to call police officers to the examination center and it was later established that the two suspects had a deal to engage in examination malpractice.

Bagenda almost peed in his pants as he confessed that he was approached by his class teacher called Kigozi to sit exams for Namuwonge. He says Kigozi liaised with the headteacher Moses Hamara, of Kawempe Standard School to sneak him into the school to do the exams.

“The plan was for the two students to have nearby index numbers and write the opposite names and index numbers, but Bagenda forgot and wrote the girl’s name with index number U1002/099 which would otherwise be his own,” sources added.

Police have also since established that Bagenda’s Index No. is U1002/099 and Namuwonge’s is Index NoU1002/098. It has also been realized that the two students reside close to the head teacher, Hamara, at Kawempe Kuttano.

UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule, confirmed the incident but declined to divulge the names of the perpetrators.

“A case of impersonation was registered in Kawempe division in Kampala, a male candidate was found writing examinations for a female candidate. This impersonation was made possible by the headteacher of the center where this information was being conducted,” she said

Upon arresting Bagenda, Namuwonge, and Hamara, the police team rushed to St Janan Luwum to arrest teacher Kigozi but he had already left the school since he doesn’t reside at the school.

Over 349,445 will complete their papers by end of November. Out of these, 50.3 percent are males while the rest are females.
