Salama school for the Bind

11 pupils of Salama school for the Blind have been confirmed dead following a 1am fire on their dormitory. The school is located in Luga Village, Ntanzi parish, Ntejeru Kisoga town council in Mukono district.

The Police say an investigation has kicked off.

“The Police at Mukono are investigating the cause of the a fire outbreak that took place today at about 1am at SALAMA School for the Blind,” part of a statement issued by Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire reds.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, he added but said, “so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed.”

According to Owoyesigyire, 6 pupils are in critical conditions and admitted at Herona Hospital in Kisoga.

Since schools resumed in January, over 18 incidents of fires have been reported in several parts of the country.

In January, four children were killed when fire broke out in the dormitory of New Crest Junior at Kibedi Day and Boarding Primary School in Kawempe.

Several others were left injured.

In February, a 12-year-old pupil died in a fire that gutted the dormitory of Good Times Primary School in Kawaala in Kampala. Following that, a 14-year-old Emmanuel Muwumba died in a fire that gutted one of the dormitories of St Joseph Senior Secondary-Nakanyonyi in Jinja.
