Traffic Police has made good on its word by impounding boda bodas found in breach of festive season operational guidelines released last week.

On November 01, 2022, Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic spokesperson announced an operation against reckless riding which she said is the major cause of road accidents.

She stated that starting November 07th this month, the traffic department and other sister security agencies will officially launch festive seson operations on boda bodas to minimize increasing accidents.

In her statement, Nampiima tasked all boda boda riders to use reflective jackets, crash helmets and carry only one passenger at a time. She also declared arrests of cyclists riding without PSV permits and those flouting traffic lights.

Nampiima also cautioned passengers to be observant of motor bikes operating without both front mirrors and number plates.

Today, traffic police officers along Jinja Road in Kampala could be seen rounding up boda bodas found in breach of the above regulations.

By press time, Our reporter Minah Nalule could not independently verify how many riders had been affected by the ongoing operation.

Traffic Police has recently attributed the highest number of road accidents to reckless riding by Boda boda operators.

“It has come to our notice that motorcycles (boda bodas) have become a menace on our roads. Every time we have five crashes on the road, four of them involve motorcycles and many people die. As we launch the festive season operations we are to start with motorcycles on November 7,” Nampiima said last week.

Last month, police released a video captured by Police CCTV Cameras, showing boda boda accidents caused by reckless driving.
