National Unity Platform (NUP) head Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine is elated at the grand victory of Lawrence Alionzi in Wednesday’s virtual guild presidential elections.

Alinzo, an an Electrical Engineering student at the University garnered 5,839 votes, way above his competitors in the 88th Makerere University guild president elections where over 27,000 Makerere students participated.

He was followed by Ibra Hussein who polled 2,079 votes, Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate, Justus Tukamushaba came third with 1758 votes, followed by Blessious Namirembe with 359 votes, Calton Muyinda with 238 votes, Ronald Mugisa with 106 votes, Edward Nalwango with 37 votes, Honest Natumanya with 24 votes. .

Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the NUP party president took to social media to congratulate Alinzo.

“Our own comrade Alionzi Lawrence aka Dangote, all the way from Arua (West-Nile) was decisively elected 88th Guild President of Makerere University. Thank you Gallant Makerereans for rejecting the regime’s blackmail and trusting this brother. Congratulations✊🏾 May you serve well.” he said

Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga followed suit in a tweet saying:

Gallant Makerereans! Allow me, to allow you, to allow us, to Thank you for voting @LAlionzi as the 88th Guild President for @Makerere Thank you for believing & trusting @NUP_Ug Ee Dangote Oyee, NUP Oyee.

The initial elections were suspended in July a few hours before the polling date after the death of Micheal Betungura Bewatte,  a former law student at Uganda Christian University, Kampala campus.

Betungura had joined his FDC counterparts at Makerere to rally support for his old-time friend Tukamushaba, the party’s flagbearer. He was stabbed to death prompting management to suspend the guild elections. The university has since banned physical elections.
