Production warrant for jailed Ssegirinya

The Buganda Magistrate’s court has directed Prisons to produce Hon Ssegirinnya Muhammed in person by December 22, 2022 for the hearing of a case on incitement of violence.

Presiding Magistrate Sanula Namboozo on Tuesday issued a production warrant for the incarcerated MP after he failed to appear in court over transportation concerns.

The case involving inciting remarks on allegedly made by the legislator on his Facebook page “Ssegirinya Muhammad Fans Page” was coming again for further hearing. However, besides Ssegirinya’s absence, the State represented by attorney Ivan Kyazze wasn’t present in court for this matter to proceed.

His lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima tasked prisons to explain to the court why his client wasn’t brought before court. The prisons explained that they were faced with a challenge of transportation. The Magistrate issued a production warrant for him to come to the next sitting.

After court, Ssegirinya’s personal assistant Alex Buwemba expressed dismay that his boss will be not be out for festive season. Buwemba also says that the MP’s family is suffering and that his constituents are helpless.

Production warrant for jailed Ssegirinya

Prosecution states that Ssegirinya alias Mr Update posted statements on his Facebook page calculated to incite the public to participate in violence against a section or group of Ugandans. 

He is quoted to have posted on his Facebook page between August and September 2020 that “I am warning those who are trying to assassinate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu that what will happen will be forty times worse than the 1994 Rwandan genocide.”
