Ailing MP Ssewanyana

The Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana remains hospitalized at Murchison Bay Hospital in Luzira prisons after his ulcers reportedly got worse at Kigo prison.

This week, the MP was transferred to Luzira in what his lawyer Erias Lukwago has described as critical, being unable to walk and talk, besides complaining of having chest or heart complications.

Lukwago says the MP had to scribble his demands in a paper because he couldn’t verbally express himself.

“The situation is really worrying as he was in a lot of pain.He complained of chest pain, which suggests that he has a problem with the heart or any other internal organ. He only managed to scribble down a few things to explain to us what had transpired and what has been done so far,” he said.

Lukwago is now demanding that his client is transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.

Journalists who witnessed his transfer say the MP was brought into the office of the Officer in Charge while being carried by fellow inmates.  His hands and legs were also swollen.

However, the Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine says there is no need for alarm as the MP is not in a dire state as being portrayed. Baine says Ssewanyana has been complaining about his health since a week ago after his ulcers got worse.

“He was being managed well in Kigo until a few days ago when he started complaining of having other pains, so for purposes of knowing what is going on, we took him to Luzira. So his going there was not because he is in a worrying state but we were not taking his complaints for granted,” he said

Ssewanyana was locked up in September 2021 alongside his Kawempe North counterpart  Muhammed Ssegirinya. The duo are facing charges of terrorism, murder and attempted murder over a spate of killings in the Greater Masaka Area.
