Police in Manafwa are hunting down rowdy locals who lynched a 19-year-old boy on allegations of theft.
Wanambwa Dick a resident of Bumufumba village , Bukhofu sub-county in Manafwa District was killed by an angry mob who caught him attempting to break into a shop through the roof.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson says on February 14 at 1:15 am at Aswan village, Nakhendo parish Bukhofu subcounty, Wanambwa was busted by the shop owner identified as Ngituku Ekisofer, creating a hole through the roof with an ax.
Taitika says Ekisofer immediately sounded an alarm that attracted other locals who started hurling stones at the suspect, causing his death.
According to the Manafwa District Police Commander (DPC) SP Najib Waiswa by the time local police arrived at the scene, locals had already fled the scene and only Wanambwa’s lifeless body was lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
Police also recovered a pit axe used to break into the shop, next to the deceased. The body of the deceased had been conveyed to Mbale city mortuary pending postmortem examination.
Mob justice is illegal. It is a form of extra judicial punishment or retribution in which a person suspected of a crime or wrongdoing is typically humiliated, beaten, sometimes undressed and in many cases these are usually done by a crowd.
