Two casual labourers buried alive at Wakiso stone quarry site

Police in Wakiso District are investigating circumstances under which two people died at a stone quarry site on Wednesday morning.

The deceased identified as Dora Atwine 28, and Ariangatum Francis 27 are both residents of Kasenge cell, Kasenge ward Kyengera town council Wakiso district. They were buried alive at Bison stone quarry in Magwa cell, Buddo parish Kyengera Town council Wakiso district.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango says the deceased reported for work at at 8:00 am in the morning and went about their normal operations of quarrying until the upper soil collapsed on them.

“Its alleged that the duo are casual labourers who always derive their survival from this quarry and today 05/04/2023 at about 0800 hours they reported for work at the quarry as usual, they even sold one trip of hard core thereafter continued with quarrying but along the way the upper soil collapsed and buried them.” says Onyango

Onyango says preliminary findings suggest that the soil that buried the deceased was weakened by heavy downpour that occurred the previous night.

He says a team of detectives and officers from Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene and worked with community members to retrieve the two bodies in addition to collecting statements from witnesses.

The bodies were taken to Mulago for postmortem.
He has appealed to members of the public who work in quarries to at least suspend their operations or be careful during rainy seasons.
